It is important to get to a safe
place as soon as possible. If you or someone you
know is in immediate danger, call 911 for a police
response.
Once in a safe place, you may want
to consider notifying the police to make a report.
If you do not wish to involve police, you may
contact our 24-hour hotline at (908) 526-7444 to
obtain support and discuss your options. Our
advocates will provide you with information that can
help guide you to make a decision on your treatment
and aftercare as you see fit.
Immediately following a sexual
assault, DO NOT shower, bathe, douche, eat, drink,
smoke, urinate, or change clothing as this may
potentially destroy evidence. If you do wish to
remove your clothing, place each item in a separate
paper bag to bring with you to
SART if you
are activating the team, along with any other pieces
of evidence.
Whether you choose to activate
SART
or not, it is important to seek immediate medical
attention to assess possible injuries and obtain
medication to prevent potential sexually transmitted
infections and pregnancy resulting from a sexual
assault. This can be obtained through
SART, your
general practitioner and/or gynecologist, or at
Women’s Health & Counseling Center. To obtain
more information on WHCC’s medical services, call
the hotline at (908) 526-7444. During business
hours, SASS staff can assist you in making an
appointment with our medical practitioners to obtain
immediate medical care. To inquire about an
appointment, contact SASS staff at (908) 526-2335,
ext. 130 or 132.
You may be going through a roller
coaster of emotions, but please remember that there
is no “right” way to respond to a crisis. It is
important to keep in mind that a sexual assault is
never the fault of the survivor!
